Abstract

The author presents information about the workshop “Central and Eastern Europe – A Tobacco Control Institute“ held in Warsaw, 6-12 May 2000. Current situation in smoking epidemiology in Central and Eastern Europe is characterized namely by aggressive tobacco advertisement and complicated social and economic situation of people. This means that tobacco control requires comprehensive actions. Besides traditional individual policy approach, influencing community environment as a whole, should be implemented. Such approach includes advertising and promotion (restriction of tobacco advertising, non-smoking promotion), clean indoor air (prevention of passive smoking), youth access as well as cigarette pricing. Importance of mass media can not be neglected. They play a major role in forming of public opinion and cooperation with them should be considered as an integral part of tobacco control activities.
